Thanksgiving

     Sandwiched between Halloween and Christmas, and overshadowed by chaos of Black Friday, Thanksgiving tends to be a little overlooked. The attention it does get is often focused on football and turkey. And yet, Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays of the year. It is the one day that Americans have set aside to thank God for His goodness, blessing, and provision. But with the true meaning of Thanksgiving becoming more and more forgotten year after year, is it any wonder that America is where it is today?
     I would venture to guess that most of my readers know the story of Thanksgiving, but I'm going to tell it again. In the early 1600's, a group that we now know as the Pilgrims began the long voyage to America. They were willing to make this dangerous and nearly uncharted journey in order to follow God in the manner they believed was right. Finally arriving in America after months at sea in cramped conditions, with many sick, the Pilgrims then had to face winter in this new land. At times, only seven or eight adults were well enough to care for the sick and help build houses. Out of the 102 passengers that had set out for America in the Mayflower, only 47 were left after that winter. They were further impaired by the conditions of their contract with the merchants who had funded their journey, which held that the Pilgrim's land and houses should be owned by the merchants. William Bradford, who was governor, realized that this was not good at all for the settlers, and instead gave a plot of land to each family that would be their own. Then, the Indians Samoset and Squanto came and helped the settlers learn to plant, among other things, in America. When harvest time came, the Pilgrims were blessed with a large harvest. They then had a feast, and invited the Wampanoag Indians to join them. During this feast, the Pilgrims gave thanks to God for providing them with a bountiful harvest, for the lives of those who had survived, and for the Indians.
     That was just the beginning of Thanksgiving in the U.S.A., however. Throughout its history, American presidents George Washington, John Adams, and James Madison, have proclaimed days of Thanksgiving for God's blessing and provision. Then, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln designated it to be a national holiday every final Thursday in November (the date of Thanksgiving has changed since then).
     I know this post is a bit late (sorry about that!), but whenever this time of year rolls around, I would urge that we all, once again, make giving thanks to God for His blessings the "main idea" of our Thanksgiving.

July 4th

     I know I'm a little late, but I hope you all had a good 4th! In honor of the occasion, I finally decided that I'm going to post the Declaration of Independence. As you read it, please note the many references to God.


The Declaration of Independece

     IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776

     The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
     When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
     We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. -- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, -- That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. -- Such has been the patient suffrerance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

     He has refused to Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
     
     He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and     pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

     He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
  
     He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

     He had dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the  people.

     He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause  others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

     He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

     He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

     He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
   
     He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

     He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

     He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

     He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
          
     For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us: 
     For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
     For cutting off our Trade with all the parts of the world:
     For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
     For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
     For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
     For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies: 
     For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
     For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

     He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

     He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

     He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

     He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

     He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

     In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
     Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
     We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Thoughts From my Bible Reading

     Today, I was reading from Acts chapter 12, about how Peter was arrested by Herod, and then was delivered by an angel. When I read about how Rhoda recognized Peter's voice, I could just imagine the scene...

Knock, knock, knock
"I wonder who that could be?"
"I suppose I'll go and check." (Rhoda)
Knock, knock, knock
"Hello? Who is there?"
"It is I."
"Peter!!!!!"
delighted scream
"Rhoda, who is there? Are you alright?!"
"Oh, you'll never guess who's at the door! It's Peter!"
"You must be mad! Peter's been arrested."
"I am not mad! It's truly Peter!"
"That's impossible; it must be an angel."
"No, it is not. It is Peter."
"Well, if it is, then why isn't he with you?"
"Oh... I forgot to open the gate."
Meanwhile, at the gate, Peter is chuckling, knocking, and praising the Lord.

     Another thing I came across, from Acts 13:8-12, how a sorcerer attempted to prevent Barnabas and Paul from telling the deputy about Christ. The neat thing is, is that the Lord caused the sorcerer to be blind, and because of this the deputy believed! Isn't that just amazing?

Animals

     Wednesday was my youngest sister's 9th Birthday. Yesterday, we went out to Chuck E. Cheese for it. That was fun :). And we got an ice cream cake!

     Her birthday present was a hamster. So, after eating, we all headed to the pet store. There were so many adorable animals! She finally decided on getting a central asian dwarf hamster, and then named her Ginger. She also got a neat cage with lots of tunnels and even a staircase. Unfortunately, Ginger doesn't get along very well with our other winter white hamster, Winnie :(.

     While at the pet store, we also decided to get some fish to add to our collection. We ended up getting two GloFish and two Neon Tetras. And here's something really neat about the GloFish - the ones we got were Danios. But what makes them GloFish (with really bright colors and all) is that jelly fish DNA has been put in them. Isn't that really neat? But don't worry, they don't sting :).

Mother's Day

     Hope everyone had a happy Mother's Day!

     On Saturday, all of my sisters, my mom, my grandma and I all went to an absolutely beautiful park and had a little bit of a photo shoot. We had a lot of fun!
    
     After that, we went to a Ladies' Tea at my church. I think for some of the ladies, the chocolate fountain was a highlight :D. A few of the little girls got quite messy, and my little sister, Megan, could've watched the chocolate flow for hours!

2012 Teen/Parent Conference

     Remember my post from a while ago about the conference? Well, it's happened! And it was completely Amazing!

     Of course, there were activities. A climbing wall, obstacle course, high jump, shooting range, paintball, a few blow-ups, shot put (I really have no idea if that's really how it's spelled :D), volleyball, basketball, football, carpet ball, etc. I did not do them all :). I did end up doing the climbing wall, obstacle course, and shooting range. My little sister, though, won both the girl's fastest time on the obstacle course and the girl's best jump for the high jump.

     Okay, now we get to the really good part - the preaching and singing. The Clark family sang quite a bit, the BBC York ensemble and their pastor's trio sang, and so did Kenny Baldwin. All awesome. And for the preaching, Charlie Clark, Mike Clark, Tim Ruhl, and Kenny Baldwin preached. Again, really awesome. All awesome preachers, awesome and practical messages. The theme this year was "Protect His house... I WILL!" I really learned a lot.

     The most amazing session of it all was the last session. First, Bro. Mike Clark preached on being a Phinehas. Phinehas, in Numbers 25, was bold for God, and did not tolerate sin. Bro. Clark also mentioned that his children would be blessed because of his boldness. Then, the Clark girls sang. They didn't remember all the lyrics to their song, and had to look it up on their phones. But they sang a song. I don't know what it was called, but it had a line in it that goes something like "I found it all when I lost everything." After they sang, Bro. Baldwin preached. He preached on total surrender. It was so amazing how everything from the previous message and the girls' singing just tied into each other!

     I can honestly say, God really worked. Right now, I will do my best - with God's help - to apply what I learned this year. And I can't wait to learn more next year!

Jubilee Shalom Duggar

I just finished watching the last episode of 19 Kids and Counting, where the Duggars find out that Michelle miscarried their 20th baby. It was so sad. And it was amazing how Mr. and Mrs. Duggar reacted when they found out... "The LORD giveth, and the LORD taketh away; blessed be the name of the LORD." said Mrs. Duggar. And then they prayed. You know, sometimes it can be easy to forget that the Duggars are real people, with real sorrows, joys, struggles, and triumphs. But it this episode, it was amazing to think that this response wasn't staged. It wasn't written. It was the immediate, natural response of God's children to turn to Him in their grief.

Lunch

Today was my day to make lunch. I had absolutely NO idea what I could make, so opened the refrigorator and stared at it :D. Generally when I do that, I go stare at the pantry, then the freezer, and back to the fridge finding absolutely nothing. But this time, I found a pizza sauce jar. Then I found some flour tortillas. And an idea formed in my head. So, I took out two tortillas and spread the sauce. I grabbed some shredded cheese and added that. Then back to the fridge I went. I found some leftover ground turkey and bacon, then some broccoli that needed to be used up, and tossed them on as well. Then I broiled them both for five minutes, and tada! out came lunch :D.

Teen/Parent Conference

Last year, my older sister, parents, and I went to an amazing teen/parent conference in York, Pennsylvania. This year, they're doing another one, and I can't wait! If you're from the area and can, you should definately consider it!

It's in May - May 3-5. Kenny Baldwin, Tim Ruhl, and Charlie and Mike Clark will be preaching. There is free childcare, as well. Head on over to Bible Baptist Church's website to learn more.

Monumental

Kirk Cameron, an actor from Left Behind and Fireproof is now directing and producing a new movie called Moneumental: in Search of America's National Treasure. Watch the trailer below:






This is something that all Americans need to see. So often these days, American citizens just do not know why our nation was founded, or what the principles upon which it was founded are. This country was founded upon biblical principles, yet what is happening? Our history is being re-written to no longer include these facts.


Sometimes the only way forward is to go back.




Oh, I would like to recommend a course on the U.S. Constitution. It is a free, 10-week course that is being put out by Hillsdale College to learn about the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Here is the link: http://www.hillsdale.edu/constitution/

Well With My Soul

Well With My Soul

“Tell us a story, Grandpa!” Andrew and Agnes excitedly begged. Grandpa and Grandma had come for baby Rose's first birthday, and the children loved it when their grandfather told them stories – even if they were old ones. But today, Grandpa had a new story in mind. “Sure, kids! This time, my story is about something that happened sixty years ago. My story takes place in April of 1912 – when I was about your age, Andrew. But first, let's all go to the living room and get comfy.” Grandpa took his story-telling position in the great big armchair, and the eager listeners gathered around on the floor.

“It was April of 1912. My family had been visiting my Grandparents in England. When it was time to go home, my Father paid for our passage back to America on the Titanic. I was so excited; the ship was gigantic! Your Great-Aunt Lily and I had a lovely time exploring it.

“Unfortunately, on the second day into the voyage, Mother became sea sick, so Father spent all his time in our cabin taking care of her. Because we wanted to be a blessing to our parents, we made sure not to go anywhere that they could not hear us, and stayed out of mischief and out of the crew's way.

“On the third day, Lily and I had an especially good time. By the end of the day, we were very exhausted, so we went to bed early. At about 11:40 p.m., I woke up as I was jolted out of my bed. Lily awoke as well, and Father went to find out what was going on. Lily started to cry. I went over to comfort her the best I knew how. She, Mother and I all prayed that His will would be done. Just as we finished praying, Father came back down. He said, 'The ship's hit a glacier. Get dressed, children. I believe we will have to evacuate the ship.' Lily and I were very nervous, and dressed quickly. Soon our family made our way on deck, with Father carrying Mother.

“We prepared to board the lifeboats. However, foolishly, the ship had not been equipped with nearly enough lifeboats. The cry of 'Women and children first!' was echoed over and over all around the ship. The crew members and noble men were holding back those men who were trying to sneak a passage on a lifeboat.

“Lily clung to me then, weeping. As Father gently laid Mother in a lifeboat and helped Lily and I on board, he said his final fare-wells. His last words to me were these: 'Son, you are the man of the family now. Take good care of your Mother and sister. Above all, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding; in all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” And remember, son, that God has given men the responsibility to protect women, and that women and children are the future of the nation. Never act in cowardice and fail that responsibility.'

“I started to cry as well. We pushed off, and Father stood, waving on the deck. Behind him, we could see people scurrying about. Then I heard Wallace Hartley and his musicians begin the familiar tune of the hymn 'It is Well with my Soul.' I heard my father singing. I began to sing as well.

When peace like a river attendeth my way,

“I saw the ship sinking, sinking, sinking. The sensation of profound peace mixed with utter confusion and despair made my whole body tingle.

When sorrows like sea billows role;

“The Titanic was being swallowed by the sea, the lights brilliantly lighting up the wee hours of the morning.

Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

“I thought of my father and the other men on the ship. They were willingly giving up their lives for those of their women and children. I knew that many of those men understood all too well what this song really meant. It was well with their souls; they were right with God, and had done their duty. But it was more than just a sense of duty that had compelled them to do this thing. They had done this out of love for God. They were fulfilling the command in Ephesians 5:2 - 'And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.'

“As I sang the rest of the chorus, I watched as the ship sank bellow the surface of the water. There was not a dry eye left on the lifeboat. Just about every one had lost someone - a father, a brother, a son. I prayed for all of them, and us, too. What would we do?

“'Trust God,' answered a still small voice. 'Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not on thine own understanding; in all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.' I knew that God was talking to me. I prayed that He would help me to just trust him.

“I learned many lessons from that fateful day. They were summed up in my father's last words. Part of obeying the command in Proverbs 3:5-6 is to read and obey God's Word. And in His Word, I find that men are to treat women as precious gems. They are the weaker vessels, and need to be protected. I also find that if someone harm a child, it were better for him that he were drowned.”

After a moment, Agnes said, “That's an awfully sad story, Grandpa.”

“In a way it is, sweetie. But did you know what happened after that?”

“No, what?”

“Your Great-Aunt Lily got saved!”

“Really?”

“Yes. She saw how much her father must have loved her – and me and your Great-Grandma – to die on the sinking ship so that we could have room on the lifeboats. She saw that what He did reflected God's love, and how God truly is a loving Father. So my mother led her to Christ.”

Andrew had been thinking this over. He realized that it is truly God's role for men to protect women. “Grandpa,” he said, “Can you teach me to treat women that way?” “I sure can,” said Grandpa with a
great big smile, “I sure can.”
